Laser nail fungus treatmentNail fungus is a common problem, and thanks to a simple, pain-free laser treatment offered right here at Step by Step, it can be easily cleared up.

What nail fungus does

Sometimes, nail fungus can cause pain and discomfort, especially when wearing shoes.    It can also create a lot of embarrassment for people who have an infection because nail fungus can deform the nail and cause it to change colour.  Nail fungus might also create an unpleasant smell.  Needless to say, many people with nail fungus will avoid wearing open shoes and sandals, and may also miss out on social activities in order to hide their feet and unsightly nails.  Often the nail fungus will make nails very thick and hard to cut, which can lead to discomfort, ingrown toenails, and more pain and discomfort.  Sometimes, the nail will actually detach completely.

How we can help

If you are affected by nail fungus, come in to see us at Step by Step Professional Family Foot Care.  At our clinic, we offer an easy, painless, drug-free treatment for nail fungus that has several advantages over the creams and pills that are often prescribed.  We use the Cutera GenesisPlus Laser System to treat nail fungus effectively without the inconvenience or side effects of other treatment methods.

Cutera GenesisPlus compared to creams and pills

Creams are not always effective at treating nail fungus because they do not penetrate the nail enough to come into contact with the fungus.  Pills often have unpleasant side effects such as gastrointestinal or skin disorders, headaches, and can affect the liver.  Both the creams and the pills must be used for several weeks.

The Cutera GenesisPlus Laser System is effective at clearing up nail fungus without the inconvenience of creams, without the side effects of pills, and with no pain or discomfort.

The laser kills the nail fungus by gently heating it.  As the nail grows, it will grow in clear and healthy.

Whether you use the creams, pills, or laser treatments, the old, infected nail will not become thin and clear again; the nail fungus will be killed off, and you will have to wait for your nails to grow out to see the final results.

Our typical treatment course for nail fungus

At Step by Step, we first take pictures of all nails before each treatment so we can monitor and compare treatment progress.

Next, we trim and file your nails to get as much of the fungus out manually as possible.

Then, we soak your feet in a whirlpool bath with medicated sea salts and soap.  The foot bath is pipeless, offering no hard to clean crannies for fungus to hide in and spread infection, and it is also cleaned and disinfected with hospital-grade solvents to make sure they are completely sterilized.

The foot soak makes sure that surface of your feet and nails are clean and fungus-free.  Once your feet are dried with a disinfected towel, the laser treatment will begin.

It takes about 40 minutes to treat each toenail with the laser.  It is recommended that all nails are treated even if they don’t look infected, since the beginnings of an infection are invisible to us.

Once the laser treatment is finished, we apply an anti-fungal solution and send you home with a fungal kit to use to make sure the nail fungus doesn’t have a chance to start growing again.

Many patients will show improvement after one cycle of treatment.  More severe infections might require additional treatments.
