Foot care and toenail care for nail infections

If you have discoloured, unattractive nails, there is a good chance you’ve got a fungal nail infection.

At Step by Step Professional Family Foot Care, we are able to treat fungal nail infections effectively and painlessly, and provide you with products to help you take care of your nails at home without taking potentially harmful oral medications.

The first step is always assessment.  You book an appointment to come in so we can have a look and determine if it is in fact a fungal infection, and if so, how severe it is.

Next, we clean your nails to remove as much of the fungus manually as we can.  Since the fungus gets underneath the nail, this approach won’t cure the nail infection, but it will remove whatever is within “reach” – at the top edge of your nails.  Fungal nails tend to get thick and difficult to cut, so we will trim your nails for you, which will also remove some of the fungus.  By removing what we can in this way, we leave less fungus behind to be dealt with in other ways.

After cleaning and trimming your nails, we use a topical solution to kill the fungus from the outside in.  We also supply you with a home care kit, which includes:

  • the topical solution to be applied daily as directed
  • an anti-fungal cream so the fungus doesn’t infect your skin
  • a spray to kill the fungal spores that are lurking in your shoes
  • a sea salt treatment to replenish your skin and get rid of any microbes

We will then schedule a return visit in six weeks to reassess.  If the fungal nail infection is gone or is well on it’s way, we will continue with this treatment and have another look in another six weeks.

Advanced treatment of fungal nail infections

If the infection doesn’t seem to be improving quickly enough, we will take a more advanced approach which involves our Cutera GenesisPlus Laser.

This approach begins with cleaning and trimming your nails again, and then a foot soak in a whirlpool bath with an anti-fungal soap and sea salt.

The foot bath is completely hygenic and is a “pipless” system, which means there are no little pipes for fungus to hide in, and the bath is sanitized with medical-grade disinfectants (the kind used in clinics and hospitals) after each use.

After the foot bath, we take photos of your nails so we can measure progress.  Then we use the Cutera GenesisPlus Laser on each nail.  Follow up visits are every four weeks until the nails are clear and healthy looking.  Photos are taken before cleaning and trimming so we can see the progression of healing.

The laser is very quick and effective at getting rid of the fungus, and depending on the severity of your nail infection, it may clear up your nails after one treatment.

We also provide you with the home management kit to speed up the process and to prevent new fungus from setting in.

If you are fighting a fungal nail infection, now is the time to come in and see us.  With the hopes of warmer weather coming soon, wouldn’t it be great to get rid of the infection and have clear, healthy nails before sandal season is here?
